Well, I started out last week with a cold/cough again, but we had set those really high goals I talked about last week. So, we just worked anyways, and we worked, and we worked. Even after Hna Schwartz twisted her ankle on Saturday. We kept walking around anyways, because we were more or less out of potentials, and we just wanted to find a couple more people.
The Lopez family came to church which was a huge miracle! The mom Marcella is really nervous about anything that isn’t Catholicism. When we first met her she wouldn’t even commit to an appointment, because they’re ‘catholic’. We’ve been discovering though that it’s not Catholicism they’re worried about leaving behind, but the virgin Mary. It’s really hard when people start telling you about how the virgin has answered their prayers, because all you’re thinking is ‘um.. I’m pretty sure she’s just a poster on your wall, and that posters don’t answer prayers’, but apparently you’re not allowed to say things like that to people. Anyways, they won’t commit to a baptismal date because they know that they’ll have to leave the virgin Mary behind. Marcella said, ‘I feel like I’m playing with you, and with the virgin. I like what you say, but I really believe in the virgin.’ I like what my district leader had to say about it, ‘Don’t play with her then, drop her.’
Anyways, I attached a photo of the Lopez family reading in the picture BoM because I’m pretty sure it should be in the next ensign.
Our other investigator Toni said yes to a baptismal date, but his date is for September, because his girlfriend has to get divorced so they can get married. We’re also pretty sure he has some big struggles with the Word of Wisdom. Even though that’s not what he told us when we taught it to him this week.
The miracle moment this week was when we met a lady named Vicky. She was outside of her cousins apartment smoking, and when we started talking to her one of the first things she talked about was how she knew we were there for a reason. She had quit smoking a while before, but had gone out because she was having a really hard day. She had recently moved out from her home with her husband, and son, because of problems she has with alcoholism. She talked about how she’s learning to give everything over to God because she can’t overcome her addiction on her own. She had tried to do it by herself before but the alcoholism just turned into an addiction to painkillers. She had the sweetest spirit, and I was really touched as she talked about all the things that she was doing to try and repair the damage she had done in her family. She said that if things don’t work out with her husband it won’t be because of a lack of trying on her part. Anyways, she was American so we had to pass the referral on to the Elders, but it was still really nice to be able to meet with her for a bit.
Any who. I didn’t get my weekly letter so that’s lame. You should start mailing them to my current address. I still have a while here. Also you should keep Luis in your prayers. It’s the last couple of weeks before his baptism, and he went to Vegas with his cousins this weekend. Carmen went too so that’s good, but I’m still a little worried about it. He also hasn’t been very diligent in his Book of Mormon reading which is mostly my fault for not being better about following up with him. Christian also could use prayers. He doesn’t feel like he’s received an answer to his prayers about whether or not the church is true.
Loves you,
Rachel
