Mexico to Caye Caulker

Getting out of Mexico was a nightmare! From all the reading and asking I did, I figured they were going to charge a $20 exit fee when we tried to leave the country. Also, from all the reading and asking I did, I knew we did not have to pay said $20. Anyway, to make a long story short, we ended up paying the bogus fee and took a long bus ride down to Belize City where we caught a water taxi out to Caye Caulker. Caye is pronounced “key” in case you were wondering.

Since our plane from Mexico City arrived in Chetumal at 8:30 AM, I thought it would be best to take the bus instead of waiting for the water taxi that left at 3:00 PM. The two hour water taxi ride would have landed us on Caye Caulker around 5:00 PM. Well, guess what after all theĀ hassleĀ at the border, plus the long bus ride, plus the wait for the water taxi, we actually arrived about 5:00 PM. Oh well, live and learn.

The one bright spot of news for the day is that Caye Caulker is pretty stinking amazing. Rachel and I are ready to move here permanently!

While waiting for the water taxi, we went down the street and bought some Chinese takeout food, which we ate in the water taxi terminal. After getting settled in to our rooms, we explored the island and bought some ice cream.
